Brice Station Vintners Wine Tasting Notes

The Brice Station Winery is high. It sits at over 3,000 feet elevation, making it the highest winery around. It's really high. The ranch was a popular stage stop in the 1800's for folks going up and over to Nevada. Today the ranch is a great winery stop, indeed.

Brice Station Vintners is owned by Stuart Mast, a fifth generation California farmer, and Dolores Quyle Mast, who oversees the vineyards.

Within the ranch's compound you'll find the tasting room, a pottery shop, and a blacksmith's barn, where Stuart Mast teaches classes on select Saturdays, (call winery for schedule).

We were greeted by Dolores, who opened up the tasting room and invited us in. She had been out giving a grape demonstration to some local school kids. She still had a bucket of Cab grapes, which she let us taste.

The tasting was free and if you ask how many wines we tasted, I'd answer, "all of them". We really liked most of the wines, all solid and simple, and all priced very reasonably. I think the most expensive wine was $23, with most priced in the teens. Great value, for sure.

The stand out white was the 2006 Pinot Grigio ($14) with it's tropical banana nose. The best red was the 2004 Cab ($19) with an awesome cherry nose.

Brice Station is a working ranch, with "an assortment of sheep, geese, horses, and llamas", not to mention dogs. We brought Stella (our small dog) who was treated warmly by our host, and was looked at with curiosity by the winery dogs.

We highly recommend Brice Station. It's worth a trip out of town, or make it a stop on the way to and/or from Big Trees Park. A big helping of down-to-earth, folksy hospitality.
