Galante Vineyards Wine Tasting Notes
Dead in the center of the village of Carmel-by-the-sea, and back in one of those quaint little alley ways, is the cute little tasting room for Galante Winery. [The winery itself is up in the hills on a big ranch, and tours of the estate are available with an advanced reservation, (our pourer recommended two weeks ahead of time), but there is no official tasting room at the winery itself].
When we walked into the small tasting room, there was a couple tasting at the bar who were there to pick up their club member's shippment, and another small group finishing up. The one pourer, (we forgot to get his name. Lets call him Jim...), let us know he'd be right with us. There wasn't any more space for us at the small tasting bar anyway. We looked around at the kitch "old west" cowboy stuff. For example, there's a big-ass armchair in the shape of a cowboy boot in one corner, and plenty of spurs and south-west inspired paintings hanging on the walls. But don't get me wrong, it's not Disney or over-the-top, it's actually very comfortable.
The small group left, and we bellied up to the bar. Jim got us going right away with the 2005 Estate Pinot Noir, as we chatted with the wine club couple. They raved for a bit about being members before they left too. Then it was just us and Jim. That's when the pours got generous. It cost $5 to taste 5 wines, but we wound up tasting more than 8 wines. He even challenged us with a a vertical tasting or two, asking what differences we noticed from year to year.
Overall, very nice. we got lucky by being the only ones in the tasting room, so our service was very attentive. We talked with Jim for about an hour, and by that time is was near closing time. He didn't rush us, at all.
Good Deal Alert: "Kick Ass" Cab ($12) Great bottle of wine to go with your backyard BBQ feast. We bought the 2004 "Kick Ass" Cab and drank it with some pasta and red sauce.
