Georis Wine Tasting Notes
An old, rustic, dimmly lit spanish adobe with tasting room and gift shop with lots of mexican trinkits, &c... Great outdoor garden atmosphere. Awesome in the summer. As for our visit, it was cold, dark and rainy, but the fire inside was warm and inviting.
The outdoor space is wonderful, with big comfy chairs and couches, while the tasting room's more intimate space is full of antique furniture and rustic hand crafted fixtures.
We were greeted by Evan, who told us about the two kinds of tastings:
Premium $15 - 5 wines
Grand - $20 - 5 wines (3 year vertical of estate merlot)
We decided to do one of each tasting and share.
Evan set us up at a table with a "flight map", a sheet of paper with a spot for each glass describing each wine offered. It was nice to have all 10 of the wines poured and in front of us, so that we could take our time, instead of having the pourer waiting for you, or you for him. We could sit and relax and talk about each wine, and compare. And Evan was behind the counter and available for any questions we had.
Georis focuses on making French Bordeaux style Merlot and Cabernet Savignon, reds that big are dark and earthy. We found almost all the wines to be well-balanced and of excellent quality.
Evan was a bit flaky at the end. We got up for a moment to check some of the nic-nacks and he cleared our table, including our tasting notes. I had him retrieve them from the trash.
Then another fellow who was tasting at a nearby table walked out without paying, but eventually came back to ask Evan if he'd paid.
Then, when it was time for us to pay for our tasting and one bottle of wine, he forgot to give us the bottle of wine until I asked him for it . We bought: the 2004 Vincent $24 (blend: 28% Cab, 72% Melot).
The service wasn't as bad as it sounds. We were there until closing time, and I think at the end he was trying to get everything closed down. He was otherwise very nice.
Overall wine rating: 4.5 (excellent!!) And although the tasting itself is quite expensive, the wines are very reasonably priced, with several nice bottles in the $18 - $25 range.
Great wine, and a great tasting facility. The owner has a big art studio across the street, and when we were there they were holding a weekend BBQ, art and wine event for all to attend.
