Rabbit Ridge Wine Tasting Notes
In 2007 they sold this Healdsburg tasting room and dormant winemaking facility for $4 million to Ken Wilson, owner of Wilson Winery and Mazzocco Vineyards, after Rabbit Ridge's owner was caught operating outside the limits of his winemaking permits. Rabbit Ridge was producing 280,000 cases of wine in the year 2000, according to The Press Democrat, even though it's 1992 permit only allowed for 50,000. To make that much wine, Rabbit Ridge also needed to overstep their building permit by constructing about seven unauthorized buildings on the property.
By 2007, after settling with the county for $500,000, the winery had been forced to tear down the unauthorized buildings and had stopped producing wine on the site, moving all wine operations to it's Paso Robles property. And by the end of the year the property fell out of escrow, at which time the above mentioned Ken Wilson swooped in and bought the 45 acre property.
We visited the Rabbit Ridge tasting room before it closed, unaware of it's problems, and made out with a great deal: a $50 case of a nice 2004 Sauvignon Blanc. Little did we know it was a close out sale. Very good wine for the price, though.
