Shinn Estate Vineyard Wine Tasting Notes

As my family and I were tasting around Long Island, people kept telling us that Shinn Estate Vineyard is "a bit out of the way". Yes, it's more than ten feet from the next winery, but far from being "out of the way". Geez. In fact, it's a great family winery experience in a great setting that should not be missed.

We entered on the dirt driveway and pulled up to the tasting room in a small barn next to the winemaking facility. Inside the barn there is a simple bar, kind of country feel, with a few small tables where you can elect to sit for the tasting. Love it.

I was with my family, a group of about five of us, and the young gals behind the bar set us up at one of the tables, and described the wines we were tasting in great detail.

The wines are pretty reasonably priced, with lots of good choices in the $18-$30 range. Our favorite was the 2006 "Wild Boar Doe" ($30), a blend of 40% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec, 15% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It was smokey, light, and elegant. Worth going into the $30 range, for sure.

Shinn Estate also has a Bed & Breakfast on the property, in the historic Shinn Estate Farmhouse, dating back to the 1880's. There are four guest rooms overlooking the vineyards and surrounding farmland, each with flat screen televisions and wireless internet, for about $150 per night.

Every weekend @ 1:30pm there is a tour & tasting hosted by owners David Page and Barbara Shinn.
